❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Where is my data stored?
Entirely on your iPhone, in the app’s private sandbox. SpendLens has no server, no cloud, no account login. Uninstalling the app deletes all of it.
How do I back up my data before switching phones?
Use Settings → Backup inside the app to export a complete JSON backup file. AirDrop or email it to your new phone, then use Settings → Restore on the new device to import it.
iCloud sync is on the roadmap but not yet released.
How does receipt scanning work?
When you tap the camera icon while adding a transaction, the photo is sent to Anthropic’s Claude API for OCR. The merchant, amount, date, and category come back, and the form is filled in. The image stays on your device after that.
You can use SpendLens without ever scanning a receipt — manual entry works fine.
Why does my budget show “Resets in N days”?
If you’ve set a custom renewal period on a budget (Edit Budget → Renewal), the card shows when the next reset will happen. Budgets without a custom period reset on the 1st of each calendar month, the same way they always have.
Why are some transactions in the future?
When you mark a transaction as recurring (e.g. monthly), SpendLens auto-creates copies for the upcoming periods so you can see what’s scheduled. Future-dated transactions don’t count toward “spent so far” or your account balance until their date arrives.
My budget percentage is wrong / numbers don’t match
Two common causes:
- Future-dated transactions in the current month — these now correctly excluded from “spent so far”; you may need to fully relaunch the app twice to pick up the latest update from TestFlight.
- Goal “Already saved” field — was renamed to “Baseline (excluded)”. If you typed your current account balance there, the goal will show 0% until new deposits arrive. Edit the goal and tap “Count current balance” to fix.
What’s the difference between Goals and Budgets?
- Budget — a monthly/recurring spending limit for a category. Alerts when you approach it. Resets each cycle.
- Goal — a target you’re saving toward (e.g. KD 3,000 for a holiday) or a debt you’re paying off. Tracks progress over time. Can be one-shot or recurring.
What’s the AI Coach?
Tap the AI Coach card on the dashboard for personalised advice based on your recent activity. The card sends an anonymized summary of your data (category totals, top merchants, etc.) to Anthropic’s Claude API and shows a tailored response. It’s entirely opt-in and doesn’t run unless you tap.
Why don’t I see my custom category in the income picker?
You should — this was fixed in a recent update. If you still don’t see it, force-quit the app twice from the App Switcher to pick up the latest TestFlight update.
How do I switch the app’s currency?
Settings → Currency sets your default base currency. Each individual account can also have its own currency (when you create or edit an account). Foreign-currency transactions are auto-converted using a daily exchange rate.
Can I share Pro with my family?
A few options:
- Family Sharing (when Pro is launched) — Pro is shareable across your iCloud Family Sharing group.
- TestFlight invite — anyone you invite to test gets the full app for free.
- Apple Promo Codes (after launch) — up to 100 free codes per quarter to share.
Email me to request any of the above.
How do I report a bug?
Email me with what you were doing + a screenshot. The faster path: while in the app, shake the device to bring up the iOS feedback options, or just email directly.
Refunds and billing
The app is currently free. If a paid Pro tier launches, refunds for in-app purchases are handled by Apple — go to reportaproblem.apple.com and select the SpendLens purchase.
